3D TVs the future
Nearly two centuries ago, Sir Charles Wheatstone discovered in 1833 the idea of presenting slightly different images to the two eyes using a device he named a reflecting mirror stereoscope. When viewed stereoscopically he found that the two images were combined in the brain to produce 3-D depth perception. This is how current 3D TVs and 3D glasses work – Stereoscopic 3D.
Now if you were wanting to watch 3D TV without glasses this is due out commercially 2011/12 for the mainstream market in the UK. The technology of watching a TV without 3D glasses is being developed rapidly as each of the world’s top television manufacturers compete to be the first with a viable working Autostereoscopic display. Sometimes this is referred to as Auto 3D. As this sounds better it will be interesting to see if the market ends up labelling these new goggle-less 3D TVs as Auto 3D TVs, only time will tell. There had been issues with picture clarity and distance of viewing which had delayed development of these new Autosteroscopic TVs but reports suggest these obstacles have now largely been overcome.
